Matière Première translates to “raw material” — and that philosophy is the backbone of this French fragrance house.

Each perfume is built around one central ingredient, pushed to a deliberately high dosage. Nothing diluted. Nothing decorative. Just the ingredient, fully expressed.

The brand is also known for its strong sillage and impressive use of naturals: most compositions contain 85–92% natural ingredients.

For context, many mainstream fragrances contain closer to 20% naturals, and even brands labeled “natural” often land around 20–40%. This commitment matters — you can feel it in the depth, texture, and longevity of the scents.

From the 10 fragrances in the discovery set, I already own Santal Austral, and three others truly spoke to me:

Already in my collection — and for good reason.

This is sexy in a quiet, confident way. A woody, powdery floral built around organic Australian sandalwood oil, softened by a creamy almond-milk iris texture. Benzoin Absolute adds warmth, while Venezuelan Tonka Bean rounds everything out into something smooth, sensual, and deeply wearable.

It’s polished without being precious. Comforting, but undeniably alluring.

A dark, amber-woody fragrance that smells exactly like it sounds.

Anchored by Guaiac Wood Oil, this scent is deep and grounding, lifted by the sweetness of Indonesian Patchouli Oil and the earthy spice of Cypriol Oil. Cabreuva Oil adds a subtle ambered sparkle — hints of warm florals and refined woodiness that make this feel both strong and surprisingly versatile.

Memorable. Elegant. Slightly mysterious.

This one surprised me the most.

Often described as “candied smoke” —

that description is perfect. Built around Somalian resin incense, I wasn’t prepared to love it. Resinous scents usually aren’t my thing.

And yet… here we are.

There’s a powdery sweetness woven through the incense, with Labdanum Absolute and Benzoin Absolute adding depth and sensuality.

The real surprise is the coffee extraction — not bitter, not sharp, but soft, smooth, and sweet. Everything is gently held together by Madagascar Vanilla Absolute, making this complex, unexpected, and completely addictive.

Pure. Fire.

This is a bold, unapologetic vanilla, led by Madagascar Vanilla Absolute at full volume — dark, deep, and penetrating. Palo Santo Oil calms the intensity, while coconut powder softens the edges. White musk adds a clean, airy sweetness that keeps it from tipping too heavy.

This is not a shy vanilla. It’s for someone who isn’t afraid of projection, presence, and lasting power.

Exploring Matière Première through a discovery set reminded me why I’m choosing this slower approach in the first place. Sitting with these fragrances — especially the ones that surprised me — allowed them to reveal themselves in ways they wouldn’t have if I rushed to decide.

When fragrance is given time — worn, revisited, and lived with — it shifts. Some scents ask to stay. Some simply teach you something and move on. Both have value.

Discovery Set Diaries is my way of choosing intention over impulse — and Matière Première felt like the perfect place to begin.
