Not All Vitamin C Serums Are Created Equal 🍊
If you’ve ever strolled down the skincare aisle (or scrolled online) you know Vitamin C serums are everywhere. They all promise brighter skin, fading dark spots, and protection from all the stress life and the environment throws at us.
But here’s the thing: not all Vitamin C serums are created equal. Some feel like a dream, some turn into orange juice on your bathroom counter, and some are worth every penny. I’ve tried a mix — from budget-friendly to medical grade and here’s my honest take.
When it comes to Vitamin C, science matters! But I also care just as much about how it feels in my real life:
Texture — Does it sink in, or am I sticky for the next 30 minutes?
Layering — Will it play nice with my SPF and makeup, or does it pill into little skincare snowflakes?
Stability — Does it stay clear, or oxidize faster than an avocado on the counter?
Results — Is my skin actually brighter, smoother, more even?
The Lineup:
🧡 Timeless Vitamin C+E Ferulic Acid Serum (budget-friendly pick)

If you’re new to Vitamin C, Timeless is a great starter. It’s affordable, packed with L-ascorbic acid + vitamin E + ferulic acid, and super lightweight. It absorbs fast — which I love. Timeless offers a 20% Vitamin C and 10% Vitamin C option – what does that mean? A gentle version for more sensitive skin is available, and I love a product line with options – not all skin is the same.
This brand oxidizes quickly – meaning within just a few months it can turn that dreaded orange. Store it in the fridge to last longer (but warm it up on your fingertips before applying) and use it up fast. But for the price, it’s a solid entry-level serum.
Sooo Human Take: With twice daily use, I noticed less dullness in my skin and overall evenness to my skins tone and texture. You can't beat their price point, if you're working within a budget and wanting results, Timeless Vitamin C+E Ferulic Acid Serum is a great place to start.
💛 Paula’s Choice C15 Super Booster (mid-price point, customizable)

This one is clever. It’s a booster, which means you can use it alone or mix a few drops into your moisturizer. The Super Booster contains 15% pure L-Ascorbic Acid. It layers beautifully — no stickiness, no drama — and feels gentle even on more sensitive skin. For the price point, the stability is good, and I love that it’s flexible. Think of it as the “easy-going friend” in your skincare lineup.
Sooo Human Take: I love this brand, so it's no surprise that the Paula's Choice C15 Super Boost is a powerhouse booster of Vitamin C. With twice daily use, I noticed improvement of those pesky facial lines and a glowiness (is that even a word) to my skin. I also love it can be mixed in with other products.
✨ Dermalogica Biolumin-C Serum (mid/high price + luxe)

This serum feels luxe. Smooth, silky, almost spa-like in texture and smell. This formulation has the least amount of Vitamin C, weighing in at 4.65%, compared to some of the other brands. While the 4.65% concentration might seem lower than some other serums (which can range from 10-20%), the key factor for effectiveness is how much Vitamin C is actually delivered to and absorbed by the skin. And BioLumin-C delivers!
Sooo Human Take: I am a loyal Dermalogica brand user and with regular use (twice daily), I noticed a nice brightening and smoothing effect. It’s pricier than Timeless or Paula’s Choice, but you’re paying for that optimized delivery system and the elevated experience with real skin tone improvements. For someone who wants performance and a little ritual, this hits both.
🧡 Mr. Lulu Vitamin C Powder Serum (the innovative pick)

This one’s different — it comes in powder form (think crystals). You sprinkle some into your palm, add a few drops of water (or a moisturizing mist, which I love using), then rub your hands together until the crystals dissolve. The texture shifts into something almost slippery, and then you press it onto your face. This is the highest concentration of Vitamin C in this review, ringing in at 80% concentration.
Sooo Human Take: What I like about Mr. Lulu Vitamin C Powder Serum is you’re activating the Vitamin C fresh each time, which means it stays potent longer and doesn’t oxidize in the bottle. I noticed beautiful results, brighter overall complexion and skin tone. It also feels like a little mini ritual — mixing it up makes me slow down. If you are someone who just like to pump and be done, the little extra effort compared to a pump-and-go serum may not be your thing, but if you love skincare as a ritual, it’s worth it.
🌟 SkinBetter Alto Advanced Defense and Repair Serum (medical grade, investment pick)

Now we’re in the big leagues. This lightweight, creamy textured serum is the gold standard — clinically backed, highly stabilized, and results-driven. It feels less like a serum and more like a treatment. It layers beautifully, doesn’t irritate (it can be used twice a day), and the long-term results are unmatched. The catch? The price tag. But if your budget allows, it’s absolutely worth the splurge.
Sooo Human Take: I use a lot of SkinBetter products, and if you are going the medical grade skincare route, this brand is the place to start. This serum is gentle enough for twice a day use, and powerful enough to improve uneven skin tone and redness. I noticed almost immediate results within a few days of twice daily usage, and lasting results with continued use.
Takeaways:
Vitamin C doesn’t have to be expensive to work (hi, Timeless 👋).
Mid-price picks like Paula’s Choice are reliable, flexible, and user-friendly.
Dermalogica makes Vitamin C feel like skincare and self-care.
Mr. Lulu is innovation in a bottle.
And if you’re ready to invest in medical grade, SkinBetter brings science and results that deliver.
At the end of the day, the best serum is the one you’ll actually use consistently! Because skincare isn’t just about the products — it’s about how we show up for ourselves.
It’s also worth noting that adding Vitamin C serum to your routine is an important step when it comes to protecting your skin from free radicals (cellular damaging molecules in air pollution, certain diets and environmental exposures), and storing your Vitamin C in a cool dark place will prevent degradation.
Final Thoughts:
That’s my lineup — from drugstore (well available in Target,) to medical grade. And because skincare is personal, your results may be different. But hopefully this helps you find the one that fits your skin, your budget, and your life.
What about you? Do you have a Vitamin C holy grail… or a total flop? Share — I love hearing everyone’s experiences.
Got questions or a favorite product I missed? I’d love to hear from you.
XOXO,
Hilary
