Skincare that Won’t Break the Bank (or your tweens/teens skin barrier)
- Hilary Burke

Let me start with this: I’m not a dermatologist. I’m not a pediatrician or an esthetician. I’m just a skincare enthusiast — and a mom — who’s spent more than a little time reading labels, researching ingredients, and navigating the wild world of skincare for myself and my kids.
With the influx of influencers and trendy skincare routines, tweens and teens are being hit with a flood of product recommendations — many of which are way too harsh for developing skin. And don’t even get me started on the self-esteem piece. Between the filters, the “perfect skin” standards, and the endless hauls, it’s no wonder kids (and parents) are confused about what’s actually needed.
The truth? Skincare doesn’t have to be complicated — especially not at this age.
Helping your tween or teen build a simple, age-appropriate skincare routine can be a great step in promoting overall hygiene, self-awareness, and a healthy relationship with their body. It’s not about perfect glass skin— it’s about consistency, care, and understanding what their skin really needs right now.
But here’s the thing: Skin under 18 doesn’t need — and honestly, shouldn’t be using most of the anti-aging ingredients and trending actives flooding their feeds. That includes:
❌Retinoids (like retinol)
❌Exfoliating acids (glycolic, lactic)
❌Strong vitamin C serums
❌Harsh scrubs
❌Artificial fragrance
These ingredients might be great for adult skin, but for younger, still-developing skin? They can be irritating, stripping, and unnecessary. Tweens and teens need barrier support, hydration, and (if needed) gentle acne care — not an advanced skincare routine made for someone in their 30s. Or a million-step regimen like me.
We’re talking about minimal fragrances and age-appropriate actives, barrier-supportive basics — all with a side of confidence-building and body connection. Because good skincare isn’t just about skin. It’s about starting the conversation early — helping our kids build habits that say: “I take care of myself, I respect my body, and I know how to tune in.”
That’s why I put this together — not as medical advice, but as a mom-tested, kid-approved roundup of gentle, effective, and mostly budget-conscious products and brands that can help your tween or teen feel like they’ve got a “fab face routine” without compromising their skin’s health. I reviewed the brand’s transparency, ingredient lists, and formulation approach, and when needed, I checked tools like INCIdecoder or EWG to make sure they were gentle enough for developing skin.
This blog, or tween/teen skincare guide if you will, reflects a mix of firsthand use, brand research, ingredient review, and publicly available product information. Nothing here is sponsored — just shared with care and curiosity 💛
This blog is like the U.N. of skincare for tweens and teens. You’ll notice a few international brands in this mix — like South Korea and Australia. Aussie and K-beauty products often highlight gentle, skin-nourishing staples like rice water, green tea, licorice root, centella, and fermented botanicals — all fantastic for developing skin. That’s because South Korea and Aussie skincare tend to keep it simple, gentle, and culturally-rooted in habit-building rather than hype. They’re big on sun protection, big on clean ingredients, and not so big on influencer fluff.
Clean but effective: While “clean beauty” is a buzzy U.S. trend, Aussie skincare tends to skip the drama and lean into short ingredient lists, natural botanicals, and eco-conscious formulations — but always with performance in mind. Think: less hype, more function.
Prevention over correction: Many Australian brands (especially ones like Petite Skin Co.) start the skincare conversation early — focusing on developing habits instead of chasing flawless skin. It’s less about “treatment” and more about protect, hydrate, and nourish — especially for younger users.
Nature + Culture meets science: Thanks to their unique biodiversity, Australian brands often include native ingredients like kakadu plum, tea tree, or eucalyptus — and South Korea tend to focus more on prevention, protection, and natural ingredients tied to their culture and environment. Both tend to work closely with formulators to balance those natural actives with science-backed efficacy.
🌎 Sustainability matters: Aussie consumers are big on sustainability, so their brands usually reflect that — think refillable packaging, biodegradable mailers, and planet-conscious sourcing baked into the brand story from day one.
The takeaway?
You don’t need acids and retinols to care for tween skin. These global brands remind us that simple can still be powerful, and that skincare rooted in nature and tradition has stood the test of time.
✨ TL;DR:
Australian and K-Beauty skincare = minimal, mindful, sun-protective, planet-positive, and no BS. Perfect alignment for a tween/teen starter routine — especially when feeling overwhelmed by overly glamorized U.S. marketing.

What’s Inside This Guide (aka: Let’s Not Overcomplicate It)
Here’s how I broke things down:
🧴 Full routine brands – Think: cleanser, moisturizer, toner — the works. Great for teens who want the full experience (one stop shopping within one brand).
✨ One-hit wonders – A few standout products that are gentle, effective, and perfect for easing into skincare without the overwhelm.
❌ Things to avoid – Because not everything in the beauty aisle is made for tween skin (even if it’s trending on TikTok).
💛 A little connection – Skincare is self-care, yes — but it’s also a sweet opportunity for you and your kid to connect, laugh, and learn something together.
No gatekeeping, no pressure, just a curated list from a mom who reads ingredient labels like bedtime stories.
Let’s get into it.

🚫 Things to Avoid in Tween + Teen Skincare
When it comes to developing skin, less is usually more. Here are some common ingredients and trends to steer clear of — not because they’re “bad,” but because they’re just too much for younger skin.
❌ Harsh Actives
Retinoids / Retinol – Designed for mature skin and aging skin, not needed at this stage.
Exfoliating Acids (AHA/BHA) – Glycolic, lactic, and salicylic acid can over-exfoliate sensitive skin.
Strong Vitamin C Serums – Can be irritating for first-time users or sensitive skin types.
❌ Fragrance (Synthetic or Natural)
Smells nice but can trigger irritation — especially in sensitive or acne-prone skin.
❌ Over-Cleansing & Scrubbing
No need for gritty scrubs or cleansing twice a day. Gentle wins every time.
❌ Ten-Step Routines
Your tween doesn’t need serums, eye creams, masks, or a mini fridge. But the mini fridge is super cute and can keep your eye patches cool for when you need them.
TL;DR: If it’s marketed for “anti-aging,” promises to “brighten” or “resurface,” or has a name like “Glow Bomb” — it’s probably not made for young skin.
Now, let's get into some skincare…
Product & Brand Lines with Tween/Teen Sets
If your teen is into packaging that looks like it belongs in a Vogue flat lay but you want it to come with a conscience, Fig.1 nails it. Their Teen Routine Set delivers that luxe, curated feel — without harsh ingredients or excessive waste.
What’s in the set:

Gentle Cream Cleanser – Glycerin-based for max hydration, plus squalene and nourishing plant oils like evening primrose, grape seed, and meadowfoam.
Hydrating & Balancing Toner – A gel-serum hybrid with hyaluronic acid (gentle and safe for young skin), plus fermented minerals and amino acids for hydration and elasticity. It does contain a small amount of salicylic acid — helpful for breakouts but may be too active for everyday use on super young or sensitive skin.
Ceramide Moisturizer – Lightweight, deeply hydrating, and full of barrier-loving ingredients like ceramides, peptides, and oils (grape seed, borage, evening primrose).
Price point: $94 for the full starter set — but future refills are all you need to buy, which reduces cost and waste long term.
Why it works: Minimalist, beautiful, and eco-friendly. Perfect for older tweens/teens who are ready to care for their skin and the planet. Just be mindful of the toner’s salicylic acid if your child is under 12 or has ultra-sensitive skin.

If you're looking for skincare that’s clean, holistic, and still feels like an elevated experience, Primally Pure hits the mark. Their Teen Acne Bundle brings in old-school simplicity with seriously thoughtful ingredients — no harsh synthetics or unnecessary filler.

Clarifying Bar – Raw honey, charcoal, and essential oils for a gentle yet deep clean.
Everything Spray – A multipurpose toner packed with witch hazel, unfiltered apple cider vinegar, and antibacterial plant power. Great for calming inflammation and supporting healing.
Clarifying Serum – Looks like a fancy serum, but it's loaded with nature’s best: vitamin E, C, and K, marula oil, prickly pear seed oil, and turmeric. All nourishing, all barrier safe.
Clarifying Cream – A moisturizer specifically designed for hormonal, breakout-prone skin. Formulated with healing botanicals and healthy fats to truly feed growing skin.
Why it works: No trendy acids, no artificial scents — just real, earth-grown ingredients that support teen skin rather than overwhelm it. It’s especially great for teens dealing with inflammation, oiliness, or early acne.
Price point: On the higher end, but you’re paying for small-batch, consciously crafted products that go a long way.

A Note Before You Go…
So no, I’m not a doctor. I am a sooo human momma who believes that skincare is an important part of tweens/teens exploring their autonomy, that education beats overexposure, and that there’s a lot of power in teaching our kids to care for their skin in a way that’s grounded in curiosity, not consumerism.
And of course, this isn’t an all-inclusive list — there are sooo many great brands and products out there that didn’t make it into this post. Just because I didn’t mention a certain cleanser, serum or brand doesn’t mean it’s not a solid option!
This guide is curated, not exhaustive! It was created to highlight a mix of trusted favorites and lesser-known gems — with a focus on gentle, accessible, and appropriate skincare for developing skin. It’s not a rulebook — just a starting place.
And at the very least? Maybe it’s a conversation starter. A moment of connection between you and your tween or teen — about self-care, growing up, and what it means to feel good in your own skin.
If your tween or teen already has something that’s working for them? Amazing. If you’re just starting out? I hope this gave you a helpful place to begin.
Because skincare isn’t just about the products — it’s about how we show up for ourselves, and sometimes, for each other. It’s about supporting our tweens and teens as they explore what it means to care for themselves — with routines that are safe, age-appropriate, and affirming.
Got questions or a favorite product I missed? I’d love to hear from you.
Drop a comment or email me hilary@sooohuman.com — let’s keep the conversation going.

⚠️ Disclaimer
I’m not a dermatologist or medical professional — just a skincare enthusiast and a mom doing her best. All product recommendations are based on personal research, experience, and what I’d actually hand to my own kids. Every skin type is different, so always patch test first, and when in doubt, check in with a pediatrician or dermatologist.
